Summary

The IT as a Utility Network+ (http://www.itutility.ac.uk) will host a 1-day symposium at Utility and Cloud Computing 2014.

This event will take the form of a series of invited talks from experts in various domains on fast-moving emergency situations. Utility and cloud computing offers many opportunities for linking data and services, however, potentially the real benefit will be for the reconfiguration – mashups, to use the colloquial term – that can swiftly lead to new answers and ideas.

The talks for this symposium have all been invited from experts who have real experience and knowledge of how critical these reconfiguration characteristics are for saving lives, livelihoods and critical resources.

The talks will offer insight and inspiration in order to support the audience in gaining deeper understanding of situations where distributed and disparate computing services were or could be rapidly coupled in domains such as the environment, healthcare, travel and conflict.

Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computing at the University of Surrey, and Chartered IT Professional Fellow of the British Computer Society (FBCS CITP)

• Tim Gollins, University of Glasgow, Michael Moss, University of Northumbria – “What are records for? Historical, archival, and technical perspectives on crisis information.”

Tim Gollins is currently on secondment from the National Archives as an Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Computing Science at Glasgow University.

Michael Moss has been a professor of archival science at Northumbria University since 2013. From 2007 until 2013 he was a member of The Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Council on National Records and Archives. He is non-executive director of the National Records of Scotland.
